The SSPX didn’t consecrate any bishops after 1988 of course. They have had to make out the Archbishop to be someone who always kept dealing with Rome, though Bo Williamson contended that his position after the consecrations was to have no more dealings with Rome until they converted once more to the faith.

Their announcement that they’d been given faculties for confession during the year or Marcy, and their delight in getting official faculties after, was very much a blow to anyone who had ever explained to friends the principles of supplied jurisdiction when they were told that their confessions to SSPX priests were worthless. Likewise, getting into bed on the question of registering marriages in Novus Ordo dioceses was a smack against all those who had been married without such fraudulent proceedings before then.

Like many other traditional gatherings, they failed to recognize that Bergoglio was a master tactician. They thought they were getting concessions and firming up their position when Bergoglio’s acts debased their firmness; they were completely fooled. And the pundits who vaunt their “communion with Rome” & “faculties for confession” fell for one of the oldest tricks in the books: draw your enemy inside your lines and cut him off from his actual lines of supply & support. They sold their birthright for the mess of pottage.
